The launch of Active Inclusion’s new website – www.happyworkplace.uk – on May 14th 2026 was less of a structured event and more of a reflection on the organisation’s ethos and the experiences of participants. Stories of work, which are featured on the new site, were shared, providing an insight into Active Inclusion’s impact as well as the process of the website’s creation.
Active Inclusion is a primarily volunteer-run organisation advocating for steps to make workplaces suit the needs and preferences of those who work in them, or are currently excluded from them due to lack of flexibility. Their work inspires us to be bold and envision a happier workplace that works for us, not just the other way around.
The new website is not a finished product, but as a “living, breathing space.” It serves as:
- A story hub: an archive of experiences showing how active inclusion can transform working lives
- A collaborative platform: inviting ongoing contributions and feedback
- A call to action: encouraging people to share their own experiences via #StoriesOfWork
Visitors are urged to engage as contributors – sharing their visions for better workplaces across social media such as LinkedIn. A lot of work went into making the site accessible, and Active Inclusion welcome feedback on how to improve the site and it’s accessibility.
The website itself embodies the principles of inclusion. Developed in partnership with DRUM, a specialist in accessible digital media, its design journey reflects a thoughtful balance between creativity and accessibility. Initially, the team explored highly customised UX design, they later pivoted to WordPress to ensure broader accessibility for contributors.
Karen Blake of Active Inclusion highlighted a striking contrast:
- Three major workshops
- An UnConference on what makes a ‘happy workplace’
- A thriving peer community
- And now, a fully launched website
All achieved with a tiny budget and predominantly voluntary effort.
Karen implored those attending to consider: if this level of impact is possible with minimal resources, what might be achieved with meaningful investment?
